Turning the clocks back an hour to inaugurate the cold dark days of winter is always for me a somber admission that the warm and sun-filled days of the year are finally and formally over.
Here’s a wonderful article both on the use of the word “fall” for autumn, as well as the expression “spring forward, fall back”.
Not mentioned in the article is the fact that during World War II, in the U.S., the clocks were set to Daylight Saving Time year round, to conserve energy.
